Copra

What Is It?
Copra is the dried, white meat of mature coconuts produced by drying fresh coconut kernel either in the sun (sun-dried copra), in kilns, or by smoking. It is one of the most important agricultural commodities in tropical regions and the primary raw material from which conventional coconut oil (RBD: refined, bleached, and deodorised) is extracted. Indonesia is one of the world’s largest copra producers, with production centred in Sulawesi, North Maluku, and the coastal regions of Kalimantan. Around 1 kg of coconut oil requires approximately 6–7 kg of fresh coconut meat, which dries down to roughly 4 kg of copra. Copra oil, pressed from copra is the industrial-scale version of coconut oil: it requires refining due to the elevated free fatty acid content developed during drying, but is the most cost-efficient way to produce large volumes of coconut oil, coconut-derived surfactants, and fatty acid derivatives used in food, cosmetics, and industrial manufacturing.

Common Uses:

  • Coconut oil production (RBD): Copra is the primary raw material for refined coconut oil (RBD) production, the most widely used form of coconut oil in food manufacturing, food service, and industrial processing.
  • Fatty acid & oleochemical production: Copra oil is processed into lauric acid, caprylic acid, capric acid, and other fatty acids used in soaps, detergents, cosmetics, lubricants, and pharmaceutical formulations.
  • Desiccated coconut production: Higher-quality copra lots can be further processed into desiccated coconut, shredded, dried coconut used in baking and confectionery.
  • Animal feed (copra meal): After oil extraction, the remaining copra meal (also called copra cake) is a protein-rich animal feed ingredient used for livestock, particularly cattle and poultry.
  • Industrial soap & surfactant manufacturing: Coconut-derived fatty acids from copra oil are the basis for many natural soaps, biodegradable surfactants, and personal care ingredient supply chains.

Who This Product Is For:

  • Coconut oil manufacturer (industrial scale): Source bulk copra as the raw material input for RBD coconut oil production, the most cost-efficient route to large-volume coconut oil.
  • Oleochemical & fatty acid manufacturer: Source copra as the feedstock for lauric acid, caprylic acid, and coconut-derived surfactants used in cosmetics and cleaning products.
  • Animal feed manufacturer: Source copra meal (post-oil extraction) as a protein-rich, cost-effective feed ingredient for cattle and poultry.
  • Wholesale commodity trader: Source bulk copra for international commodity trading and resale into oil mill supply chains.
  • Natural soap & detergent manufacturer: Source copra oil as the base fat for industrial soap bars and biodegradable surfactant manufacturing.
