Ground Coffee

What Is It?
Ground coffee is whole roasted coffee beans that have been milled to a particle size suited to the intended brewing method, from coarse grind (for French press and cold brew), medium grind (drip coffee and pour-over), fine grind (espresso and Moka pot), to extra-fine (Turkish coffee). In Indonesia, ground coffee is produced from the country’s rich diversity of regional origins Sumatra, Java, Bali (Kintamani), Sulawesi (Toraja), and others and is available in both single-origin and blended formulations. Indonesia’s coffee industry is particularly well-developed in processing and packaging, with many factories offering private label and co-packing services for export brands. Indonesian ground coffee is sold both as artisan, specialty-positioned single origins and as cost-effective Robusta-based blends for food service and mainstream retail. The rise of at-home coffee culture globally, accelerated post-pandemic, has driven enormous demand for distinctive, well-packaged ground coffee products.
Common Uses:
- Home brewing & retail coffee: The most common format for retail coffee consumption sold in sealed bags (valve-sealed to preserve freshness) through supermarkets, specialty stores, and e-commerce.
- Food service & café supply: Pre-ground espresso blends and drip coffee are supplied to cafés, restaurants, hotels, and offices for consistent, volume-driven coffee preparation.
- Private label coffee brands: Indonesian suppliers offer private label ground coffee services, custom blend development, roasting, grinding, and branded packaging for export brands selling on Amazon, Shopify, or through retail.
- Instant & 3-in-1 coffee production: Finely ground Robusta coffee is used as the base for spray-dried instant coffee and 3-in-1 coffee sachets. Indonesia’s largest coffee export category by volume.
- Coffee flavouring in food production: Ground coffee is used as a flavouring ingredient in ice cream, tiramisu, coffee cake, chocolate products, coffee-flavoured spirits, and confectionery.
- Subscription & gifting products: Single-origin Indonesian ground coffees (particularly Bali Kintamani and Sumatra Mandheling) are popular in specialty coffee subscription boxes and premium gift sets.
